Hi! My name is Ava Pope and I am a part of the class of 2026. I have been riding for as long as I can remember. My mom and dad have a favorite memory they like to share….I am told I was the model child; I almost never complained or cried. One autumn, they took me for a pony ride and after the first turn around the pen, I cried until more tickets were purchased and I could get back on that pony.

As I grew, my parents had me try many different sports and activities but riding horses was always the constant. Regular pony rides morphed into weekly lessons at the age of 4 which led to the best 9th birthday present ever, my extra large pony. She taught me how to barrel race and pole bend.

In addition to speed events, I began competing that same year with the Youth Equestrian Development Association (YEDA). The multitude of different horses I drew taught me how to assess and execute patterns on horses with different personalities and skill levels. The team atmosphere is also one of the many reasons I enjoy riding in YEDA.

Currently, I am 16 years old and continue to compete in YEDA under the coaching of Dianne Eppers. With her guidance, I finished out the 2024 season ranked #1 in the Sapphire horsemanship, won first place in Sapphire ranch riding and am currently sitting at #1 in the 2025 Diamond horsemanship.

I also train with Valerie Kearns and with her help, began showing on the AQHA circuit in 2024. Even though I was new to AQHA and brand-new to Showmanship, I competed at the Level 1 East Championships and AQHA Youth World and placed in the top 10 at both shows that same year. I believe this is an excellent testament to my drive, focus, skill and fortitude when it comes to showing.

Along with loving to win, I strive for good grades and success in school. With all As and a 4.6 weighted GPA, extracurricular activities are another of my favorite pastimes. I am a member of  the:

  • Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA),

  • National Honor Society (NHS),

  • Spanish Honor Society (SHH),

  • Student Council,

  • Youth Advisory Board Prevention Club (YABPC),

  • Prom Committee, and

  • Homecoming Committee

In addition to my extracurricular school activities, I am the Vice President of the Illinois Quarter Horse Youth Association. Being the Vice President has been an incredibly rewarding experience that has taught me valuable lessons in leadership, organization and community building. Through my role, I’ve learned the importance of clear communication and collaboration in working with fellow board members and many of the amazing people whom I have met. Most importantly, this position has allowed me to connect with passionate individuals who share my love for horses, further fueling my dedication to this incredible community.

Lastly, when I have spare time I enjoy barrel racing my horse, LTF Jets Last Dance (Silver), who carried me to two top 10 placings at the 2024 AQHA Congress. And of course, I always love spending time with my family who support me in everything I do.
